A Life Defined by Resilience
My name is Adriaan Kruger. I'm a quadriplegic living with a C5/C6 neck injury that left me paralysed at the age of 17. It happened on 27 September 1990 — a touch rugby game at Frans du Toit High School in Phalaborwa. One moment I was a teenager with his whole life ahead of him; the next, everything changed.
I spent five months in hospital. My heart stopped. I battled severe lung infections twice. But I refused to give up. With the unwavering support of my family, I rebuilt my life from the ground up — started a business and eventually secured a career I'm deeply proud of.
"Today, I've been working as a Switchboard Controller at Foskor Pty Ltd for more than 13 years. I'm grateful for every single day."
My current vehicle — a 2011 VW Transporter with nearly 190,000km — is failing. The headgasket blew, a dishonest mechanic took our money and vanished, and now my 80-year-old father (who drives me daily) has lost his leg. I am out of options.
